OutlineHighways Maintenance Apprentices work for both private companies and public sector organisations. They maintain rural and urban roads, (excluding motorways), by carrying out tasks such as excavating, repairing potholes, replacing pavements and kerbs, and laying new surfaces to ensure safety for vehicles and pedestrians. Operatives use hand and power tools, pedestrian plant machinery, and equipment to locate and protect underground utilities. They also set up and manage temporary traffic control to maintain the flow of traffic and pedestrian safety. The role requires working in all weather conditions and at various times, with a strong emphasis on safety, responsibility, and environmental awareness. Apprentices in this role will develop skills in interpreting technical drawings, handling tools, and managing repairs, while learning to work safely and efficiently in a team or independently.
Assessment
Assessment:Apprentices will attend college on a block release basis at City Skills. Both theory and practical sessions will be undertaken where the technical knowledge and skills aligned to Highways will be developed.Record of evidence –The Record of Evidence presents a wide range of evidence generated in the workplace which allows the apprentice to demonstrate they are able to meet the standard consistently. evidence is from the following sources: Witness Testimony of work completed and evidenced, Employer reports, Copies of Time sheets.End Point Assessment – apprentices are required to undertake an end point assessment. This will be a knowledge test followed by a practical skills assessment to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviors developed over the programme.

Entry requirementsApprentices must be in suitable employment and have the opportunity to develop the required knowledge, skills and behaviors aligned to this apprenticeship standard.Apprentices require a minimum of Level 1 English and Maths for this programme. Apprentices aged 16-18 who have not achieved Level 2 Maths and English, prior to End Point Assessment will be required to undertake Functional Skills Assessments. For Apprentices aged 19+ Maths and English are optional – to be agreed with employer at the start of programme.
